Tritonia (Flame Freesia) is a genus of flowering plants in the iris family with around 28 species. They are wildly distributed mainly in South Africa and are close related to the genus Ixia. Small Bulbous plant up to 8 cm. Appears in great numbers in spring. Leaves fan-Shaped. Flowers shades of yellow, orange, and Brown, Sweet-smelling, and gives off a very strong parfume especially at night. Not grazed. Located in Bushman Land ; Great Escarpment ; Northern, Upper And Great Karoo in rante. The genus name is derived from the Latin word triton, meaning "weathervane", and alludes to the apparently random arrangement of the stamens in some species. Small plants with recurved leaves with slender middle vein and bright golden yellow flowers with reddish throat flowering from Autumn to winter. USDA Zone - 8 Season to Sow - Autumn Photos with credit to the late Rod and Rachel Saunders, eminent experts on South African indigenous flora. |
