In its native habitat, Chinese redbud will often grow as a tree to 50' tall; however, in North America it normally grows smaller as an open, multi-stemmed shrub. Similar to the eastern redbud, it has larger rose-purple flowers and glossier heart-shaped leaves with more deeply cordate leaf bases. It is also less winter hardy. The flowers appear in early spring before the leaves. Wonderful as a bonsai specimen!
