The Carolina Reaper is a hybrid chilli pepper of the Capsicum chinense species, originally called the "HP22B", bred by cultivator Ed Currie, who runs PuckerButt Pepper Company in Fort Mill, South Carolina. The Carolina Reaper was rated as the world's hottest chili pepper by Guinness World Records according to 2012 tests, averaging 1,569,300 SHU on the Scoville scale with peak levels of over 2,200,000 SHU. The previous record-holder was the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion. Our Carolina Reaper seeds are locally grown in isolation to avoid any chance of cross polination. Melothria scabra is a vine grown for its edible fruit. Fruit are about the size of grapes and taste like cucumbers with a tinge of sourness. They are also known as mouse melon, Mexican sour gherkin, cucamelon, Mexican miniature watermelon and Mexican sour cucumber. This plant is native to Mexico and Central America, where it is called sandiita (little watermelon). It is believed to have been a domesticated crop before western contact began. These plants are relatively slow-growing when they are establishing themselves, but can eventually grow up to ten feet under proper conditions. They are drought resistant and pest-resistant relative to other cucumbers. Similar to the cucumber, these plants are monoecious, producing both male and female flowers on the same plant. These plants can pollinate themselves, but the individual flowers are not self-fertile. Flowers are small and yellow, about four millimeters in diameter. Fruits develop at the base of the female flower. |

The pepper is a particular strain of Trinidad Scorpion which is named after Butch Taylor, the owner of a hot sauce company. The "scorpion" peppers are referred to as such because the pointed end of the pepper is said to resemble a scorpion's stinger. As of April 12, 2011, the world's hottest pepper according to Guinness World Records was a specimen of Naga Viper pepper. A laboratory test showed a specimen of Trinidad Scorpion Butch T at 1,463,700 Scoville heat units, making it hotter than a specimen of the Naga Viper's at 1,382,118. |
