Ranunculus

How to plant, care for and grow Ranunculus

Family Ranunculaceae
Name derived from Latin where rana means frog because it can live in damp areas.
Common name Persian buttercup, crowfoot, ranunculus.
Sun Exposure Full sun and semi-shade.
Flower Colours Purple, red, orange, yellow, white, pink and delicate rose.

Ranunculus is a tuberous root and has over 400 species that are originally from the Middle East but are now found in the wild in southeastern Europe and southwest Asia. They are pot- friendly as long as there is good drainage. Cutting of the stems creates more bud production. If you want to cut the stems, do it when the buds are showing colour but are not fully open. The yellowing of leaves means that the plant is experiencing poor drainage or over-watering.

Ranunculus needs well-draining soil that is watered often. If the soil in the garden is hard, we recommend that you work sand and compost into the soil to a depth of 20cm in order to make it lighter. When planting the tuberous root, the claws should be facing downwards. These plants need to be watered once every three or four days. A mulch is recommended to keep the soil cool and moist. The lowest temperature the plant can tolerate is -10°C.

The plant can be lifted and stored but it is recommended to buy new ones for the new season because this will yield better results.

Propagation

The Ranunculus is propagated by seed and the seed should be planted at the end of April in a sandy soil at a depth of 2cm. Mulch. For the first three weeks water it daily and then slowly reduce watering to every three days.
