A Marbled Purple Stripe - an excellent new Red Russian garlic a beautiful well-sized bulb with stout cloves. The distinctive wrapper leaves of these big bulbs are slightly purple. Wenger's Red Russian garlic has the ability to withstand soggy winter soils better than any of the others. Expect up to eight substantial cloves per bulb of this flavourful heirloom garlic variety.
Flavour and Uses
Medium hot garlic. Good for cooking and roasting.
Appearance and size
Averages 6-8 large cloves that are fairly consistent in size.. The bulb pops easily and there are very few double cloves, which is great for commercial growers.
Harvest and Storage
Mid-season harvest. Let those bulbs reach their maximum size by waiting until a good 50% of the leaves are brown. The wrappers on Marbled Purple Stripes (which are an extension of the leaves above) are so thick and strong that you don't need as many to be intact at harvest.
Best Planted in rows 30cm apart with 20cm between rows. The coverage that can be expected would be :

Please note that garlic is being sold in heads as opposed to cloves as the garlic is better stored in heads and produces stronger plants with better yields when broken into cloves just before planting. Listed below you will see the number of heads and approximate cloves (seeds) per head.

The Garlic being sold has been grown and harvested in South Africa and is direct from the farmer. The garlic is not imported. The varieties are acclimatized to South African conditions.
